[Things happened. A lot. But they're mostly settled now, at least enough that Kaname's finally able to drop by and visit Prompto on his ship.
She's still a little battered and bruised, and her voice is still somewhat hoarse, but it could've been way worse if he and Lucina weren't helping her. The entire ordeal cemented something in her mind, and she does want to share it.
Knocking on his door, Kaname calls out a little just in case he didn't hear.]
[Things definitely did happen. Things he's still trying to wrap his head around. He's a bit banged up, but nothing he hasn't dealt with before. It's just the circumstances that are troubling him.
His head understands what happened. Emotionally, he's upset. Maybe even angry, though he's trying not to be.
So when he hears Kaname's voice on the other side of his door, he doesn't feel as excited as he normally would. He pulls the door open and doesn't even smile.]
[Before, Kaname could tell his replies were clipped, that he wasn't in the best mood. She'd thought it was in reaction to everything... that would make sense.
But now, when she sees him, his greeting, and his very notable lack of smile, her own demeanor falters. Hesitating, she still asks her question.]
[Her initial reason for visiting was completely different, at least in tone. There was something she wanted to tell him, but with this mood, she's rethinking it. His lack of greeting or hug or anything actually has her worried, so to give him space, she takes a seat on the desk chair instead.]
What is it? You can tell me. [Kaname hopes some coaxing will get things started, as she doesn't have an immediate idea of what he might want to say.]
[It's probably better that she chose to sit there. Though it doesn't make things any easier. He nods, bracing his elbows on his knees and looking at the floor rather than make eye contact.]
About what happened the other day... I'm not... [Okay, so taking the time to think of what to say didn't help with the actually saying. He sighs, tries again.] I'm having a hard time, with what happened.
[He shakes his head, glances up at her briefly.] I don't blame anyone! I know it's not, like, anyone's fault. But I'm feeling a lot of things. Negative things. Things that I need some time to figure out.
[His words have her brows drawing together in concern. Despite his attempt at assurances, Kaname can't help but feel somewhat responsible for this even if she logically knows it's out of her control.
She nods, hands on her knees.]
Do you want to talk about any of it? [She can feel her own hesitance in asking. Prompto's had problems in the past, but he's always come to talk with her about them.]
[That's never his reply when she asks if he wants to talk. It's a lie to say it doesn't sting a little, but she nods regardless before adding a verbal reply since he's staring at the floor.]
All right. [It's really all she can say in regards to that, but not all she wants to say.]
Prompto... I'm sorry I didn't tell you about Messer. I couldn't.
Yeah. No. I mean, I get it. I get why he would want to keep that whole ... thing ... a secret. But... It could have turned out a lot worse than it did. And you had to put yourself in danger to stop it.
[As he finishes off his statement, his voice rises - not yelling, but definitely upset. Fists clench and unclench.]
[She watches his reaction, her own fingers drawing into her palms resting on her thighs. Kaname's tone in turn isn't as even as she'd like, not in reply to this.]
I was prepared for that, if it happened. [The worse outcome.] We both were. But this is what I do back home. This is how it works to make sure people are safe, and I can't draw back from that here. I explained it then: if my life is in danger, my voice is more effective.
[Her shoulders slump, and she's not sure how to explain anything else.]
I would do it all again if I had to. I can't let him go like that again.
[He nods, even as he huffs. He knows what her job entailed, and what her voice can do.]
I wasn't prepared. I knew there was a chance I'd have to shoot something out there. I didn't think it would be one of us.
[He can rationalize it in his head all day, but there was still a pang of... betrayal? That wasn't quite it. But close enough. And jealousy too. There was that. There was no overlooking how well Kaname and Messer worked together.]
Yeah. I know.
[It wasn't fair, and a part of him knew that. If it were Noctis, he wouldn't hesitate to put himself in harm's way. This shouldn't be any different.]
[The mention of him not being prepared for that hits her, and she knows she made a mistake there. Kaname knows she should apologize, but... what would she be apologizing for? For having him do what needed to be done to save Messer? Or for still involving him after he agreed to stay. Nether of those would be sincere, and she doesn't want to lie.]
I'm sorry we ended up in that situation. [This much is true.] But he'd thank you for what you did, given the chance.
[Prompto's tone almost feels like a slap, and Kaname can't keep the hurt out of her voice.]
[His words are a surprise, one she can't immediately reply to. So she sits there for a moment actually taken aback by his dismissal. It's a punch to the gut if there ever was one.
Kaname stands slowly and ducks her head, hoping he won't see her raise her hand and quickly wipe her eye with the heel of it.]
I think you're right. [There's no hiding the hurt now. She moves towards the door, brushing past him before her tears start to fall.]
july 21!

Hey, are you in? It's me.

Can I come in? I think we should talk.

[He steps aside so she can enter, and takes a seat on one side of his bed, leaving the other for her, if she wants it.
He knows he should probably say something, but as he tries to find the right phrasing, seconds tick away, and all he manages is:] Um.... so...
